Physical Game Disc Ending by Sony in 2028

All right, gamers… take a seat for this news, because yeah. By January 2028, Sony is shifting gears to go all-digital for future game releases. This is coming from the PlayStation Blog today, kicking off July with a digital slap to the face to physical enthusiasts out there. Times are changing, as most of you know, and this has been a thing for a while. Ever since music shifted to iPods and the long-missed Zune device. Let’s take a gander at what they have to say on this decision.

PlayStation Goes Full Digital!

What does Sony have to say about this movement?

“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be released, prior to January 2028 in disc format.”

Now it continues in the natural direction the SIE (Sony Interactive Entertainment) wants to adapt to the consumers. This has brought games faster to the consumers and without missing out on not having enough copies to wait on. They want to continue to strive for more innovation as time passes, and that makes sense. Look at the evolution of gaming from cartridges, to CDs, then Blu-Ray, and now digital copies. Sony ends their statement with,

“We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.”

Our Personal Take:

If this is going to be the new norm, I have been buying digital copies since the PS3 rolled out PSone and PS2 games digitally in their store. I hope this would make games cheaper since the industry does not have to waste resources on discs anymore. Bad enough that when you get a physical copy, there is nothing but the game unless you obtain a collector’s or limited-run game. The one thing that should not happen is the Live Service model; that’s how they control the media and your games. Servers shut down even if you are playing a single-player game, and boom, your investment is gone. Just like how Sony right now just took away digital movies from consumers.

So, this is a weird and bold move for them after just announcing that. I just thought about that as I am writing this; it is not a good look after that announcement. The trust is going to be shaky…for some at least. A bonkers time we are currently living, gamers. – Beast Out

  1. While I understand the evolution from physical to digital, there’s an issue I see with consumers: the same way Sony just removed all those digital movies from their platform, even though people PURCHASED them, is insane. They should not be allowed to do something like that in the future, especially with video games.

I agree they should not, but it is something that can’t be stopped like music, for example even though physical media is still available, when was the last time you bought a CD? I just find it bad timing as they just took movies away from people, so who is going to trust Sony to buy anything from them digital now is the question?
